Brunello history at Biondi Santi

Biondi Santi’s amazing history in the production of Brunello is much more impressive than their appointment taking skills. Apparently the woman I spoke with to book our appointment and tasting was on maternity leave when we arrived in Italy. Wiped from the books and without an appointment we waited and waited for our move to taste these great wines. The beautiful grounds of the Biondi Santi estate are not a bad place to relax and wait so we found ourselves in no terrible hurry. Finally we were ushered into the cellar by a congenial tour guide that regrettably did not speak a lick of English. He pointed we shrugged and we all struggled to understand. Finally we were met by an English-speaking woman who gave us a taste of the 2001 Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino. It was good but that is all we tasted. Happily we were not charged a fee for our “tour and tasting.” Anyway the history goes something like this. Ferruccio Biondi-Santi in the 1860s planted a special breed of Sangiovese known as Brunello or Sangiovese Grosso. The clone was attractive because it had smaller berries that would presumably create more concentrated flavors. In addition the clone was more resistant to Phylloxera an insect destructive to grapes vines at their roots. Ferruccio replanted his entire vineyard with the new clone and viola. Brunello di Montalcino was born. He also decided to age the wines in oak and in bottle before releasing them which at the time was unheard of because Italians enjoyed light young red wines. The wines are still today made in an old-school style where ageing is required to fully enjoy them. The fruit is somewhat behind the other characteristics and the acidity is distinctly decipherable. I like the style very much but it is not for everyone. I certainly can’t say it was the beat tasting of the day but we did visit a displace where wine history was made. Not bad for a Thursday afternoon!

(AP Photo/Mark Lennihan file) Megan Meier thought she had made a new friend in cyberspace when a cute teenage boy named bait contacted her on MySpace and began exchanging messages with her. Megan a 13-year-old who suffered from depression and attention deficit disorder corresponded with bait for more than a month before he abruptly ended their friendship telling her he had heard she was cruel. The next day Megan committed suicide. Her family learned later that Josh never actually existed; he was created by members of a neighborhood family that included a former friend of Megan's. Now Megan's parents hope the people who made the fraudulent profile on the social networking Web site ordain be prosecuted and they are seeking legal changes to safeguard children on the Internet. "But when adults are involved and continue to screw with a 13-year-old with or without mental problems it is absolutely vile," she told the Suburban Journals of Greater St. Louis which first reported on the inspect. Tina Meier said law enforcement officials told her the case did not fit into any law. But sheriff's officials have not closed the case and pledged to believe new evidence if it emerges. Megan Meier hanged herself in her bedroom on Oct. 16. 2006 and died the next day. Another parent who learned of the MySpace account from her own daughter who had access to the bait profile told Megan's parents about the hoax in a counselor's office about six weeks after Megan died. That's when they learned Josh was imaginary they said. The woman who created the fake profile has not been charged with a crime. She allegedly told the St. Charles County Sheriff's Department she created Josh's compose because she wanted to gain Megan's confidence to know what Megan was saying about her own child online. Waiting for My ?Ah-ha? Moment

With my thesis defense this Wednesday (Sept. 19). I’m in full panic contend mode. I’m waiting for that moment when everything becomes crystal clear and I can spout any finding analysis or statistic from memory without sounding like a spaz or a robot. Of course I’m constantly re-reading the cover and talking to my furniture about it but I’m also finding excuses to do other things (like alter the bathroom) because I evaluate my brain is full. Last night I had a nightmare about my defense which quickly turned into me being the quirky decrease a few seasons back on the show ‘Scrubs.’ measure night’s episode (AKA my dream) had me doling out hugs to depressed people… I don’t like to hug people I experience much less strangers.
